30 Days Without Alcohol in My Social Single Twenties

As a twenty-something navigating the social scene, my relationship with alcohol was pretty typical. Either way, I decided to try a 30 Days Without Alcohol challenge.

I usually indulge in a glass of wine with dinner during the week and letting loose with (a few…) drinks on weekends was the norm.

But I felt a tug at my conscience, a desire to prioritize my well-being amidst the cocktail of social events and late nights.

So, I took on the challenge: 30 days without alcohol. Here’s a glimpse into my journey of self-discovery and well-being.

The Decision to Embrace Sobriety

The decision to take a break from alcohol was a mix of curiosity and a desire for a reset. I wanted to see what 30 days of sobriety (no alcohol) could do for me. Plus, the potential benefits of improved sleep, increased energy, and better focus were enticing. So, I bid farewell to my nightly glass of wine and weekend partying, ready to embrace a new perspective.

Week One of No Alcohol: Sunday Reset

So, please make sure to start this after Saturday.

Why? Because these are usually the days where you don’t drink. It didn’t really get tough until Thursday without my usual glass of wine or beer.

Emotionally, it was a rollercoaster from feeling empowered to moments of anxiety and mood swings.

Why? Because I had decided to still go to parties and event in the weekend. Being sober with a bunch of drunk friends is not the greatest. It’s a mix of looking at them as idiots and being jealous of how fun they are having it.

No Monday Morning Hangover, and Early Mornings.

Keept reminding myself of the journey ahead and seek comfort in mocktails (super underrated).

I also automatically started off, by eating better. I ate a lot of greens, drank a lot of water (more than usual), and went out for a walk most days.

Week 1: Clearer Skin, Lighter Step

  • Skin: Noticed a clearer complexion and reduced puffiness.
  • Weight: Shed a few pounds from skipping those weekend drinks.
  • Energy: Experienced a newfound lightness and energy throughout the day.

Week Two: Signs of Progress

Entering the second week, I started noticing changes. The fog in my mind lifted, and I felt sharper and more focused. Physically, my skin seemed clearer, and I had more energy throughout the day.

Despite the persistent cravings, I found solace in healthier habits like evening walks and trying out new non-alcoholic beverages.

Week 2: Mind Clear, Body Light

  • Skin: Skin looked brighter, with reduced redness and irritation.
  • Weight: Continued weight loss and reduced bloating.
  • Energy: Mental clarity improved, feeling sharper and more focused.

Week Three: A New Routine Takes Shape

By the third week, the withdrawal symptoms were fading into the background. Not full blown withdrawals, but you can sense the feeling of your fingers wanting to hold onto a glass of wine.

Cravings were still present, but I found myself reaching for sparkling water instead of wine (in a wine glass of course).

Social situations became easier to navigate without the need for alcohol as a social lubricant.

I discovered the joy of deep conversations over coffee and late-night laughs without the haze of alcohol.

Week 3: Radiant Glow, Renewed Vitality

  • Skin: Glowing complexion, fewer breakouts, and a healthy radiance.
  • Weight: Steady weight loss and reduced cravings for unhealthy snacks.
  • Energy: Increased vitality and a bounce in my step. People also started to notice the changes around here. And yes, compliments about energy is the best ones.

Week Four: The Eye-Opening Results

As I approached the end of the 30 days, the results were undeniable. I had lost a few pounds, my sleep was deeper and more restful, and my skin had a newfound glow.

Without the late-nights, I found myself waking up refreshed and ready to tackle the day. Mental clarity became my new norm, and I realized how much more present I was in my daily life.

Week 4: Vibrant Skin, Lighter Spirit

  • Skin: Vibrant, glowing skin that felt nourished and rejuvenated.
  • Weight: Noticed a significant drop in weight, feeling lighter and healthier. In total I would estimate a drop in around 2,5 kilos.
  • Energy: Felt an incredible surge of energy and a clearer mind. Also, the fact that the 30 days without alcohol was now completed. Kind of a success that I made it this far. Considering taking another 20 days.

The Benefits of 30 Days Without Alcohol

According to the National Library of Medicine, some of the top benefits of quitting alcohol for 30 days include:
